COVER STORY Gravity Concentrators Africa & FLSmidth Making BIG strides in Africa 2014 has been a great year for Gravity Concentrators Africa (GCA), not only in southern Africa but also in Africa as a whole. During the year the company concluded the sale and/or installation of 43 large scale (>80 tph) FLSmidth Knelson concentrators. G CA and FLSmidth recorded a major win at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi mine in Zambia. Kansanshi is a copper mine, but it also produces 167 000 oz of gold per annum. Gold is produced in approximately equal proportions by gravity concentration and inclusion in copper flotation concentrate. Six fully-stainless-steel KC-XD20VG machines have been supplied into Kansanshi over the past three years. On the back of this significant penetration into what was an entirely competitor-machine plant, FLSmidth has also, since late 2013, supplied and/or commissioned one KC-XD20 and 10 KC-QS48 machines. In 2014 Kansanshi also installed three automated tabling systems Installed FLSmidth Knelson concentrator (ATS), bringing to six the number of ATSs at the plant site. Due to high copper levels and related cyanide problems, Kansanshi cannot use intensive cyanidation for treatment of gravity concentrates, but has had GCA vehicles en route to a site to perform testwork with a pilot rig on the back of one of the vehicles 4 MINING REVIEW AFRICA ISSUE 12 2014
